Detroit Divided

Just finished reading an excellent book by that title. It speaks to the history of this fine city and also to many of the factors act as barriers to the city’s future health and growth. Last night I had opportunity to dream with some friends of mine about God’s vision for Detroit.
We spoke of a place that’s:
A city where all students have a chance at excellent and safe education.
A city where economic development comes hand in hand with neighborhood development.
A city that’s experiencing healing and reconciliation from generations of division.
An area where homes are affordable and basic goods are available at fair prices.
A place where hope lives and justice rolls down like a mighty river.

We believe that this is more than fanciful, youthful idealism.
We believe that when God dreams of Detroit, this is what the Almighty has in mind.
And we want to be about seeing God’s kingdom come to Motown, a place that, according to her city motto, “hopes for better things” and promises “to rise again from the ashes.”

Hey Steve see you are reading the Shaping of Things to Come, we had an evening with Alan Hirsch when he was here a few months ago, that guy is on another planet, his thinking is so sharp. Rumour is he is moving to the States. He has a new book out later in the year about the role of community in the exceptional growth of the church in the NT and China, very interesting!

Steve, it was interesting reading this, Karen, one of the women on my course pastors a Methodist church in Detroit, she has had to stay up there this week as her cousin's 19 year old son was gunned down.Sounds like Motown needs hope and transformation.

Hey, Steve.

I was at the meeting on Genesis' Detroit Project. I have been thinking and praying a lot about what this could look like. In my Internet wanderings, I came across a project that the author, Donald Miller and his church, Imago Dei, have started in the Portland OR area. It is an organization to help the populations of fatherless children and single mothers--both of which are more than adequately represented within Detroit's city limits. Their vision is quite interesting, and could maybe help us generate some ideas?? http://www.belmontfoundation.org/

And, if anyone is interested in being compelled to DOING something about Social Justice, check out another project affiliated with Donald Miller: http://burnsidewriterscollective.com/. Every article I read, I feel like packin' up and flyin' out somewhere, anywhere, to get my hands dirty for the Lord!! (Although, I think we have our 'dirt' cut out for us right here in good ole Day-twa!)
